Team River Runner leaders from across the USA converged in Sacramento, CA, July 31 – August 3 for a dynamic blend of expert training, inspiring stories, and powerful team-building moments at the annual TRR National Leadership Conference. Our first day included classroom sessions on internal and external communication strategies. On days two and three some learned the latest adaptive paddling techniques, while others (including me) took a swiftwater rescue course led by outstanding instructors from Sierra Rescue International. The conference culminated in an adrenaline-pumping day of kayaking, rafting and rescues on the challenging South Fork of the American River (see video below). Everything we did was designed to support the TRR mission at our local chapters: “To provide all veterans and their families an opportunity to find health, healing, community purpose, and new challenges through adventure and adaptive paddle sports.” It was also an opportunity for me to renew many of the friendships I have made as a TRR volunteer leader over the past 15 years.
