In 2020 and 2021 I missed instructing at the Door County Sea Kayak Symposium, so it was great to be back this past weekend for the 2022 version in Wisconsin’s beautiful Door County, just an hour or so up the road from our place. This year we had 112 kayakers with skills ranging from novice to advanced hosted by Rutabaga Paddlesports of Madison. For the first time I was assigned only to offsite skill-building tours. And I liked that. I enjoy the instructional classes held in Rowleys Bay and nearby inland lakes but I prefer guiding on tours because I get to share sights (as well as instruction) with kayakers from outside the area who may not be comfortable on their own in the open waters of Lake Michigan. My tours took us to Sister Islands and Horseshoe Island on Friday, Death’s Door to Washington and Plum Islands on Saturday, and Strawberry Islands on Sunday.

Symposium director Ethan Scheiwe was cool and calm the entire weekend. At least outwardly.
