If you’re a fan of Great Lakes freighters or if your friends are, you’re seeing many posts today about the Edmund Fitzgerald on this 40th anniversary of her tragic sinking with all 29 crew members on board. Here’s a video and song about a lesser known aspect of that tragedy. It’s a tribute to Capt. Jessie “Bernie” Cooper, captain on the Arthur M. Anderson the night the Fitzgerald went down. The Anderson turned around in the storm to search, unsuccessfully, for the crew of the Fitzgerald. Give it a listen and then see how the song stays with you. “Cooper of the Anderson” sung by Dan Hall and written by David Norris. Video by Bob Haworth.
