Sesh on the Pesh: 3D Motion Capture with Video

I posted before about 3D motion capture using a Xensr device. Here’s my most recent demonstration, a kayaking session (or “sesh” as the cool kids say) recorded Sunday, Nov. 5 on the Peshtigo River in Wisconsin. To create these videos on my computer, I overlay Xensr moving map and motion data with GoPro video shot at the same time. I don’t have a way to automatically sync the two video files. For me it’s just trial and error until I manage to start both videos at the right time.

The first video captured my unintentional roll on First Drop. Depending on flow, First Drop is rated a class III+ rapid by American Whitewater. It can be a tricky feature. A curler wave likes to grab the side of my boat.

The second video is a record of Sunday’s run on the “Pesh” through Horse Race Rapids, also rated a class III+. This feature is always the highlight of the Roaring Rapids section of the Peshtigo.

Below is a compilation of all my video clips from Sunday. As you can see, several inches of snow had fallen the night before, enough for someone to make a snowman near our takeout at Kosir’s River Rafting. It was a nice touch; fun to see at the end of a fine afternoon of paddling with friends.
